PostHeaderIcon Knowing Quilting Fabrics and Fabric Grains

If you’re seriously interested in knowing about Quilting, you need to think beyond the basics. This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about Quilting.

Quilting is not just the simple pushing of needles and threads in and out of fabrics and come up with a beautiful craft appreciated for years. Like in any other art form, there are pieces of information a quilter has to master to be able to improve his craft.

In quilting, knowing and understand fabric grains is a plus for quilt-makers who want to excel.

Straight grain

Simply put, this is the way threads are woven in place in the fabric. This is important when quilters want to cut their quilting blocks accurately and with precision.
Ignorance in fabric grains can result in great waste of time, effort and materials.

Long threads are called warps. These are the ones that are stretched and secured on the loom. In effect, these become the fabric’s lengthwise grain, the continuous fabric yardage as it comes off the bolt.

The weft is the thread that is woven into the warps, perpendicular to the whole length.
This is the crosswise grain of the fabric.

The lengthwise grain and the crosswise grain are both called straight grain, or straight-of-grain. The selvage is the bound edge in the outermost lengthwise grain, formed when the weft thread change direction in the weaving process.

Fabric pieces cut along straight grain (with edges parallel to either warp or weft) are less likely to stretch out of shape. The interwoven threads give it extra support.

However, cuts along the lengthwise grain stretches less than their crosswise counterparts. This is because warp threads were firmly attached to the loom enhancing their strength.

I trust that what you’ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain.

Fabric Bias

A bias is a 45-degree angle cut in the fabric. (In quilting, any cut that is not parallel to the straight grain is called a bias cut.)

Bias cuts are stretchy and this can work for or against you. There are no threads to stabilize the fabric in a bias.

However, bias cuts have several uses. One, they are easy to apply as binding to a quilt with curved edges. Tubes can be made from them for shapes in appliqués, for instance.
They are also easier to be turned under for other curved shapes.

Bias edges can stretch out of shape and makes it difficult to sew accurately. Triangles have one bias edge and there is need to determine the best place for it because it is not stable. (Best is sewing them in the interior parts and with a straight grain piece for stability.)

Using straight grain cuts

Squares and rectangles are cut along straight grains to minimize stretching during handling. They are good in making borders and sashes. Moreover, they stabilize the outer edges of blocks and quilt tops.

Knowing and being accustomed to these different fabric grains would give you quite an idea on where and when to use any on your project. It can even make you quite an expert in identifying fabrics without the usual selvages or other marks.

At a certain stage in your quilting life, you can do your own fabric grain experiments. It does not take so much to know the best possible ways to achieve what you want in your quilt masterpiece.

I hope that reading the above information was both enjoyable and educational for you. Your learning process should be ongoing–the more you understand about any subject, the more you will be able to share with others.

PostHeaderIcon The emotional effects of stuttering on children

Many people don’t realize it but stuttering greatly affects the emotional state of a person, especially that of a child. The emotional effects of stuttering on children alone are very much devastating on his or her emotional health. Not only that, stuttering unfavorably affects not just a child’s social skills but his or her communication skills as well.

Because of stuttering, many kids think that making friends and building relationships become very disappointing and sometimes traumatizing. Having to live through stuttering at this stage in a person’s life is very awkward and painful. Friends also don’t come easy for children with stutters according to research kids with a stutter often have to cope up with bullying from peers and classmates.

Studies say that 40 percent of school-aged kids who suffer from stuttering reveal that they been a victim of teasing, bullying, name-calling and worst of all, experienced physical harassment because of their condition. They confess that just because they don’t speak too well, other kids simply don’t respect them and don’t listen when they try to say something. The tendency of this inability to express one’s self is for stuttering kids to be introverts, always veering away from crowds who might judge and tease them.

Majority of school administrators also agrees that children that stutter are bullied 82 percent of the time inside the classroom, within the school vicinity, and even outside the school premises. This is because many kids without speech problems try to make fun of them especially when there’s no adult nearby.

Kids get their self-confidence and esteem from the people around them, people like their families, authority figures or people outside their family unit that they look up to and of course their localized peer group. As children become more mature, the influence that their friends have on them steadily increases and the need to be part of a bigger stratum in society becomes more prevalent.

If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole Stuttering story from informed sources.

Children suffering from stuttering are often set aside and picked last or not picked at all to join any of the related activities of a certain group. This makes them feel that they are unwanted, resulting to low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, mood swings, lack of initiative, depression attacks, and a weak personality in the long run.

What can be done?

Parents and teachers can greatly help a lot to lessen the emotional effects on shuttering on children. This is because they can directly affect how the child with stuttering problems think and socialize with others.

For parents, they should always give their full support to their kids that suffer from stuttering no matter what. They should be able to explain to their kids what is their condition, its causes, how it happens, and what could be done about it to make kids feel that they are not alone in dealing with the problem. Parents must always provide their kids an environment that where they can feel safe, loved, and nurtured for them to overcome the condition at their own pace.

Teachers can also play a big role in helping minimize the effects of stuttering on kids. This is by extending a helping hand and more patience to child in the school setting. Teachers must realize that kids who stutter tend to lose self esteem quickly so they must do something to make the child understand that he or she is not inferior compared to other classmates.

Sometimes it’s tough to sort out all the details related to this subject, but I’m positive you’ll have no trouble making sense of the information presented above.

PostHeaderIcon How Does a Professional Plan Treatment for Someone Who Stutters

Stuttering is a disorder. Although there is no known cure, a speech language can develop a plan so this can help someone who stutters.

The first step is for the speech language pathologist to do an assessment of the individual. This means screening all areas of communicative function and then goes in depth in the form of clinical observations, standardized and non-standardized tests.

If the results show that the child’s language development is delayed, then this will focus on language. If the language development is not the problem then it will focus on something else like fluency. But in some cases, the child has both problems.

The speech language therapist is not the only one who gathers information before recommending the proper treatment. Other data that was collected from other medical professionals will also be checked to see if both are accurate.

Many specialists use the 4 levels of linguistic analysis to assess the child. These four levels are namely phonetic and phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic-pragmatic.

1. In the phonological level, the specialist will observe how well the child is able to understand, store and manipulate speech sounds.

2. In the morphological level, this focuses more on how the child is able to understand and manipulate grammar.

3. The syntactic level assesses how well the child is able to understand word-order and sentence-types.

Most of this information comes straight from the Stuttering pros. Careful reading to the end virtually guarantees that you’ll know what they know.

4. The last which is semantic-pragmatic will see how the child is able to understand gestures, body language, tone of voice and words in social contexts.

With this information, the speech language pathologist can now recommend the proper therapy for the child. Will it work? There are risks involved but if it doesn’t, there are others which can be utilized.

Since treatment for stuttering takes a long time, the speech language pathologist has to set realistic goals to monitor the progress of the child. There are three namely basic, intermediate and specific.

In the basic, everyone involved is simply trying to improve the child’s auditory processing abilities. In the intermediate, things become more challenging as the child is taught how to say words properly based on the four levels of linguistic analysis. The specific goal is what the program is all about. Yes, the child stutters but since there is no cure, everyone involved will try to minimize it.

At the clinic, a lot of exercises will be done to help the child. Some will be drills, games, stories, rhymes or tasks. Since treatment for the child does not end the minute he or she walks out of the clinic, some aids will be given to the parent so this can also be practiced at home.

The materials used in some cases are “home made” by the speech language pathologists that have been adapted or based from the child’s own toys and games.

Anyone who stutters needs to be assessed first before treatment can begin because there is no silver bullet that can make this disappear and even if you start treatment today, you shouldn’t expect to get results the day after. Treatment takes time and when the child is not in the clinic, the family should practice the drills and exercises at home not only 30 minutes to an hour a day but longer so this is recalled by the child.

When that happens, the child’s stuttering will be minimized and everyone will be happy with the progress.

That’s how things stand right now. Keep in mind that any subject can change over time, so be sure you keep up with the latest news.

PostHeaderIcon Inflatable Hot Tubs

The following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with Hot Tub.

Maybe it’s because we are living in smaller homes and apartments and we can’t afford the space to accommodate the area a hot tub would require, or maybe we just like to be able to travel and bring our luxury items with us, no matter what the reason, the idea of an inflatable hot tub was born.

Inflatable hot tubs come in just about every size to allow you to choose one that will always afford the room you’ll need for the number of people who will be enjoying their time in it. If you are planning for the hot tub to mainly hold up to two people, then a smaller size will work just fine, but if you’re thinking of using the hot tub for bigger events where more than 2 or 9 people will need the space, they have inflatable hot tubs just for that purpose, too.

Let’s say you own a summer place on a lake in New Hampshire that you visit every weekend but you don’t keep the house open all year round? An inflatable hot tub could be an option to investigate because it can be set up early in the season, even if it’s still a little chilly in the mornings and nights and at the end of the season it can conveniently be deflated and stored away until the following year’s season begins. This is a benefit because all during the off season there will be no need for the expense in electricity that is needed to continuously heat the water and there is also no need for the monthly maintenance that is recommended for hot tubs.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of Hot Tub is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about Hot Tub.

Because these inflatable hot tubs are to be set up and taken down as en as needed, they are made out of a very durable material that can withstand being placed right on the ground without there needing to be a platform or other construction built.

One caution would be to consider that there will be a certain amount of wear and tear on an inflatable hot tub that there wouldn’t be on a permanent model and that just the process of putting it up and taking it down will cause its own stresses, find a material that is heavy duty and built to last. The inflatable tubs that are being manufactured today are almost all made from a military-endorsed material that is reinforced to last; just make sure that the hot tub you choose comes with a warranty. There are so many more things that can go wrong with an inflatable hot tub that it’s best to be prepared rather than to be caught without protection of your purchase and a damaged hot tub in your possession.

It is an amazing fact that there are such things as portable, inflatable hot tubs that we are able to enjoy today and no matter what your concern; whether it is about the space you have allotted for the hot tub or if you are thinking of bringing it with you when you travel, the inflatable, portable hot tub is a great option to have!

PostHeaderIcon Skydiving Schools and What you Should Know

If you want to skydive, you have to learn a few things before make the jump and what better place to learn this is in a skydiving school or center.

There are skydiving schools spread out in the US. You can find one by looking for it using the web. From there, you can visit them and ask about their rates.

People who are new to skydiving cannot jump from a plane by themselves. They have to undergo ground training first and jump with an instructor. The most common example is tandem skydiving where the instructor is strapped to the back of the newbie and they make the jump. The newbie does not do anything except enjoy the view until they reach the ground.

For those who want become a licensed skydiver, the next step is to learn how to jump off a plane and then pulling the cord. Before you can do that, you will be introduced to static line jumping where your backpack is attached to a cord that will automatically deploy your parachute once you get off the plane.

After a few jumps, you will now pull a cord that does not activate anything but simulate the release of the parachute. Once you have completed, you will now do the real thing.

But if you want to skip that and get your skydiver’s license, you can do so by enrolling the AFF or the accelerated free fall. After jumping off the plane and free falling for about 50 seconds, you will deploy your parachute then slowly make it to the ground. This program is much cheaper in the long run and more fun compared to the static line method.

Think about what you’ve read so far. Does it reinforce what you already know about Skydiving? Or was there something completely new? What about the remaining paragraphs?

Making it back on the ground safely is not the only basis to say that you are on your way to getting your license. Most skydiving schools offer videos so they can show you what happened. If there are any mistakes, you can take note of it so this will not happen again.

As added safety measure for those who are new to this extreme sport, most skydiving schools attach a computerized automatic activation device to your parachute in the event that you have not yet opened your parachute.

Skydiving only lasts about a minute before you have to deploy the parachute. Aside from teaching how to do deploy it, the skydiving school will also teach you how to steer your parachute as it takes 4 to 5 minutes to get back on the ground. You will also learn how to land softly so you don’t sprain an ankle or get a bruise.

The parachute that you deploy when you go skydiving is reusable. This means you don’t have to buy a new one so all you have to do is know how to pack it. That is also another lesson you will learn in skydiving school because a good skydiver should also learn how to take care of their own equipment.

One thing that skydiving school will not be able to teach you is to get rid of your fear jumping from an aircraft. Yes it is scary the first time and a few more after that but if you are able to suck it up, you will be able to enjoy the experience.

Who knows? This may even encourage you to join this sport regularly and not a recreational activity.

Of course, it’s impossible to put everything about Skydiving into just one article. But you can’t deny that you’ve just added to your understanding about Skydiving, and that’s time well spent.

PostHeaderIcon The Best Quilting Pattern ForYour Needs

Quilting has enjoyed an incredible upsurge in popularity over the last couple of decades. This is a boon for the quilting enthusiast, because it has resulted in a huge number of patterns that are now available. Even a brief look around the internet or your local bookstore will prove to you that it’s a confusing world when it comes to buying a quilting pattern. The new quilter may well be wondering what kind of quilting pattern is best suited for her needs.

It’s interesting to ponder that, historically, our ancestors probably didn’t have as much use for the quilting pattern as we do. In Colonial and pioneer days, when quilting originated, quilts had a utilitarian function. Women pieced together quilt blocks from whatever scraps of clothing they could find, arranging the bits and pieces of cloth into a pleasing pattern. They shared ideas for their various patterns at quilting bees and other social gatherings. As so often happens, the pattern that started as a necessity is now a tradition. Blocks like Log Cabin and Lone Star and Bridal Wreath have been handed down for generations. At first, simple directions would have been scrawled on a scrap of paper, if at all-our ancestors might even have scoffed at the idea of following a pattern. Quilting fell out of favor for awhile, and any patterns that did exist would have been relegated to the attic.

But once quilting came into vogue again, a new generation discovered it and the new quilters were hungry for patterns. While many art and adventurous quilters take off on their own and refuse to follow a pattern, the contemporary quilter is more likely to want some directions. Thus many quilters search endlessly for the proper pattern.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on Quilting now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

The good news is that there are options aplenty. Free patterns abound on the internet, as do patterns for purchase. Individual patterns are available for various quilt blocks. If you know what quilt you want to make, it can be a good idea to purchase one of these, as it will have detailed directions on every aspect of the specific block. You’ll find step-by-step directions that cover every aspect of the pattern for your quilt. The pattern may also give you tips and techniques you wouldn’t otherwise know.

Another excellent source for patterns is to visit your library or the bookstore and peruse the quilting section, where you’ll see pattern book after pattern book. These books can be especially valuable if you haven’t yet decided on a certain quilt pattern. But be forewarned-browsing quilting books and viewing all the beautiful patterns can be quite addictive! These books will often also feature general directions for each pattern, with more instruction on quilting. If you already know the basics of quilting, spending the lesser amount of money for an individual pattern might be your best bet.

Don’t let the world of quilt patterns overwhelm you-with a little research, its easy to find the perfect pattern for your quilting needs, and you’ll have a lot of fun along the way.

Those who only know one or two facts about Quilting can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you’re learning here.

PostHeaderIcon How to Overcome Stuttering

Current info about Stuttering is not always the easiest thing to locate. Fortunately, this report includes the latest Stuttering info available.

Stuttering is a disorder not a disease. No one knows why it happens but it can be treated. Did you know that some of the most famous people in the world once stuttered? Yes it’s true and this happened years before the world ever head of them. But stuttering can also happen later on in life. The question now is how to overcome stuttering.

Since you are not a kid anymore, don’t expect your parents to be the ones to get you some help. This is something you are going to have to do yourself and you have to do whatever it takes to improve your speech abilities. You may need to get professional help which was not available years ago and try various techniques to find that right one that works.

The professional you should consult with it a speech language pathologist because he or she has the experience to deal with such a disorder. When you go looking for one, make sure he has a certificate from ASHA or American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has passed the state licensure exam. Once he is able to assess your condition, only then will he be able to recommend the right treatment.

Someone once said that the greatest “fear is fear itself.” If you let your fear take control, you will not be able to achieve any progress with the various techniques given by the specialist. You just have to bite the bullet and remember that you are working to become a better person.

You can see that there’s practical value in learning more about Stuttering. Can you think of ways to apply what’s been covered so far?

While you are still “a work in progress,” you should be able to keep your stuttering within manageable limits. If you have to talk slowly, go ahead because again, this is much better than repeating a letter or word several times which, others may find annoying. On times that the fear gets the better of you, think nothing of it and try to control it much better next time.

Action speaks louder than words and this is so true when you have a stuttering problem. If one form of therapy does not work, tell your doctor about it so something new can be attempted. Role play is quite effective in this case so you just have to practice some scenarios so you are comfortable with it when its time to face the real thing.

Patience is one virtue you really need to control your stuttering. This is because the problem will not go away overnight. The progress which you hope for can only be achieved by the amount of effort you put in. Your determination or motivation should not be to impress others but to improve who you are. Yes there will be setbacks but this should drive you to work harder.

If you have patience and have the determination to become a better person, you also have a feeling of self worth. This is because your stuttering problem has not controlled your life and you are taking steps to control it. Stuttering may be your flaw but if you are able to show your other qualities, this will not really matter.

We are not perfect and all of us have our own deficiency of some sort. We can let others feel sorry for ourselves or we can make the best of what we have and put some humor into it because we should be able to be happy and enjoy the rest of our lives.

This article’s coverage of the information is as complete as it can be today. But you should always leave open the possibility that future research could uncover new facts.

PostHeaderIcon The Step-By-Step Process of Mind-Body-Spirit Technique to Heal Struttering

The following paragraphs summarize the work of Stuttering experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of Stuttering. Heed their advice to avoid any Stuttering surprises.

Many clinicians now treat people who stutter using the mind-body-spirit medical philosophy, a model that was being practiced at least three thousand years ago.

Not only the principles and practices of this model are used to treat people who stutter. Such technique also showed effective results with terminally ill cancer patients and catastrophically ill children. Doctors employ visualization, guided imagery, and psychotherapy.

The mind-body-spirit medical philosophy is also known as “alternative medicine” or “holistic medicine” because clinicians look into the totality of the person including his mind and body to understand the dynamics that may induce or cause the illness and not just the symptoms.

The underpinning principle for such technique is that human organisms naturally yearn for balance and wellness in mind, body, and spirit. Such balance and wellness enables the body to function normally without much effort.

Therefore, recently, speech pathologist Carl H. Scott proposed a PWS in treating people who stutter. His model is based mainly from the mind-body-spirit medical philosophy. The technique does not only treat stuttering symptoms but also work the person toward balanced mind, body, and spirit.

Patients should take note of the adverse attitudes that would lead to unsuccessful treatment. The program is designed to encourage patients to develop their own inner guidance and therefore trust the technique. The technique makes patients self-reliant with a continuing source of information and inspiration to realize their goals.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and Stuttering experts is time. If you’ll invest a little more time in reading, you’ll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to Stuttering.

The fundamental principle of this process is the commitment and intimate communication of patients with their higher selves. One clinician defines it as “invisible life force.”

A variety of therapeutic techniques is provided through the healing process. Examples of these are regression, gestalt therapy, psychosynthesis, applied kinesiology, EMDR, focusing, visualization, guided imagery, hypnosis, and neurolinguistic programming (NLP).

The first stage is to guide the patients to identify attitudes, feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviour that might lead to unsuccessful healing. On this stage, clinicians are often listeners and absorbers of their patients’ seethes before the latter will be willing to throw their old belief system and accept a new perspective.

The second stage of the therapeutic sessions is to begin a healing process. Sometimes, this stage involves an inner child work. Other sessions might include dialoguing or forgiveness. The sessions are designed to dispel negative feelings and thoughts that has been stored over the years. This is because negative energies pose threat to therapeutic progress.

The next stage is designed to create a healthy belief system through indoctrination of new and positive thoughts and feelings. The sessions aim to develop a self-acceptance and love in the patients. The fundamental emphasis on this technique is to embed in patients’ belief system that everyone has freedom to think, feel, and behave.

This stage is focused on embedding new beliefs, thoughts, feelings, attitude, and behaviour on an internal level. Such goal is often attained through the use of guided imagery, visualization, and actively living the life outside the therapy environment.

This systematic process of mind-body-spirit model makes a person achieve fluency and eliminating his stuttering.
